What’s going on Friday?
You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…
Eric B & Rakim @ Apollo Theater
The legendary Rakim remains very active, and even did a tour last year playing Paid In Full, his groundbreaking album with Eric B, but now Rakim and Eric B are reuniting to celebrate the 1987 album’s 30th anniversary. This is their first show together in over 20 years, and they're promising "cuts from throughout their catalog and reveling in the moment with famous friends and fans old and new."
Steez Day w/ Joey Bada$$, Nyck @ Knight, CJ Fly, A$AP Mob, Ab-Soul, The Underachievers, Saba, Jay IDK, Jazz Cartier, J.I.D. @ PlayStation Theater
This is the third annual Steez Day, Pro Era's massive tribute show to their fallen member Capital STEEZ. The lineup is stacked as always, with Pro Era and their New York pals A$AP Mob and The Underachievers, plus Chicago's rising Saba, TDE West Coaster Ab-Soul, Toronto's Jazz Cartier, and more.
Slick Rick, GrandWizzard Theodore @ Springfield Park
Storytelling rap is we know it wouldn't exist without Slick Rick, who graces Queens with a free SummerStage show tonight.
(Sandy) Alex G, Japanese Breakfast, Cende @ Bowery Ballroom
Lo-fi chill rocker (Sandy) Alex G returned this year with the acclaimed Rocket on Domino, and he’s on tour now with dream popsters Japanese Breakfast, who are about to release their anticipated Dead Oceans debut Soft Sounds From Another Planet. The tour includes two sold-out NYC shows, this being the second.
Wolf Eyes, Circuit des Yeux/Jackie Lynn, Dreamcrusher @ Pioneer Works
This is another installment of the "performative exhibition" called "Grand Ole Opera" at arts space Pioneer Works. This one has heavy noise rockers Wolf Eyes, experimental artist Circuit des Yeux (performing under her Jackie Lynn guise), and noise artist Dreamcrusher.
Tengger Cavalry, Felix Martin @ Saint Vitus
Mongolian folk metal band Tengger Cavalry's shows are quite the spectacle, and they just have to be seen to be believed.
Musiq Soulchild, People’s Champs @ Prospect Park Bandshell
R&B/neo-soul vet Musiq Soulchild is still going strong, having released Life on Earth last year, and he headlines a free BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn! Festival show tonight. Opening is local Afrobeat band People's Champs.
Fits, Peaer, Crosslegged @ Brooklyn Night Bazaar
This is a fundraiser for Silent Barn, who are in need of some help after an extended (and successful) bid for a liquor lincense. In addition to the music there will be a Q&A session where they'll discuss budget and financial goals.
Little Wings @ Rockaway Beach Brewery
Lo-fi vet Little Wings may be unknown to a lot of people but he's beloved and considered highly influential in certain circles. Any chance to see him is a treat.
The Kevin McDonald Show w/ Sasheer Zamata, Josh Gondelman, 5J Barrow @ Union Hall
The Kids in the Hall member is taping episodes of his podcast across two shows this weekend.
The Crystal Method, Rossko, Paolo Rocco, Perry, Marite, Jean Pierre @ Output
Nineties alt-dance staples The Crystal Method, whose debut LP turns 20 this year, spin tonight.
