What’s going on Saturday?
You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...
OMD, GGOOLLDD @ Terminal 5
Some 40 years into their career, synthpop icons OMD made one of their best records, 2017's Punishment of Desire. If you haven't heard it, you should, but they will no doubt fill their set with their many '80s favorites.
David Byrne @ Ulster Performing Arts Center (Kingston)
Having just released new album American Utopia yesterday, David Byrne is currently on a short test run tour for his new live show which features a 12-piece "untethered" band. No wires, no on-stage amps or equipment that's not strapped to the performers, but plenty of Talking Heads songs.
Mind Spiders, Bodega, Gift Wrap @ Union Pool
Texas band Mind Spiders (which features helf of Marked Me) make motorik mutant punk, as heard most recently on Furies. Tonight they play with the excellent post-punk inspired Bodega.
Inter Arma, Anicon, Aseethe, Vile Creature @ Saint Vitus
Psychedelic metal band Inter Arma are still riding high off the strength of 2016's great Paradise Gallows, and they're playing just a few East Coast shows this week.
Madball, District 9, Stout, Regulate, Hangman @ Brooklyn Bazaar
NYHC greats Madball are working on a new album this year, and while we wait for that, they're playing a hometown show tonight. Maybe we'll hear some new songs.
Bhi Bhiman @ Carnegie Hall
Soul/folk/rock blender Bhi Bhiman's lengthy career has seen him collaborate with Chris Cornell, Keegan-Michael Key, Judy Collins, Rhiannon Giddens, and more. His latest album is 2015's fantastic Rhythm & Reason, and tonight he plays the historic Carnegie Hall.
Alex Cameron, Molly Burch, Holiday Sidewinder @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Alex Cameron takes cues from guys like Nick Cave and Bruce Springsteen, and his on-stage swagger and entertaining banter makes his shows very worth seeing. If you're going, it's worth catching Molly Burch too.
Red Baraat Festival of Colors w/ Women's Raga Massive, DJ Rekha, Heems @ Highline Ballroom
Brooklyn bhangra band Red Baraat are taking their Festival of Colors on tour, and this hometown stop includes a special guest appearance from another local great, Heems (of Swet Shop Boys and Das Racist).
We Were Promised Jetpacks, Active Bird Community @ Bowery Ballroom
Scottish sad rockers We Were Promised Jetpacks haven’t released an album since 2014, but they’ve been posting teasers about a new album and playing a bunch of new songs on this tour. They play NYC twice this week, this being the second show.
Septicflesh, Dark Funeral, Thy Antichrist @ Gramercy Theatre
Greek symphonic death metal band Septicflesh and Swedish black metallers Dark Funeral are currently touring North America together, and hitting NYC tonight.
Joe Russo's Almost Dead @ Brooklyn Bowl
Joe Russo has played with actual Grateful Dead members, and his tribute band Joe Russo’s Almost Dead is one of the finer Dead tribute bands going today. They’re doing a Brooklyn Bowl run this week, and this is the final show.
Springsteen on Broadway @ Walter Kerr Theatre
The Boss continues his completely sold-out “Springsteen on Broadway” run at the Walter Kerr Theatre, which has now been extended through June! At these shows, Bruce is giving fans shows “that are as personal and as intimate as possible.”
ESCAPE-ISM (w/ Ian Svenonius), Chorizo @ Berlin
Ian Svenonius is a true iconoclast and rock n' roll true believer with a lot to say, too. You cannot take your eyes off him when he performs, whether it's with The Make-Up, Chain & The Gang or with his solo project, ESCAPE-ISM
Doe, PONY, Gingerlys, Casper Skulls, Twiga, Blush, RALPH, Big White, Sur Back, Wooing, Ricky Lewis, Motherhood @ Pianos
If you miss the days of CMJ Day parties, Kanine Records is presenting this pre-SXSW party with bands from Australia, Canada and NYC. It's free, noon to 6 PM and BV's Bill Pearis is DJing in the front room from 1 - 3 PM.
Brutal Measures (Lydia Lunch + Weasel Walter), Keijuan Thomas, Straight Panic @ Issue Project Room
Brutal Measures “combines the dynamic spoken word histrionics of Lydia Lunch, one of the genres most controversial performers with the improvisational virtuosity of Weasel Walter to create an intimate, terrifying and even hilarious evening of musical verite.”
IDLES, Future Punx (DJ) @ Flowers For All Occasions
IDLES hail from Bristol, UK and make a flinty, shouty, angry brand of punk/post-punk with a “what’ve you got” rebellious attitude and lyrical style.
Michelle Wolf @ Caroline’s
Comedian Michelle Wolf’s star is rising — she’s hosting this year’s White House Correspondents Dinner and will have her own Netflix late night talk show later this year. Catch her in standup mode tonight.
