What's Going on Saturday?

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Amen Dunes, MIKE, Margaret Chardiet (DJ) @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Amen Dunes is fresh off releasing his fourth album, Freedom, which is his biggest-sounding album yet and quite possibly his best. He celebrates at MHOW tonight with experimental rapper MIKE and a DJ set from Margaret Chardiet (aka Pharmakon).

Despacio (James Murphy + Soulwax’s David & Stephen Dewaele) @ Knockdown Center
Seven stacks of 11-ft-high McIntosh amps power James Murphy and the Dewaele brothers’ (Soulwax/2ManyDJs) “Despacio” where they spin strictly vinyl under an enormous disco ball. Disco, house, rock, sountrack music…all is fair game as long as they find it groovy. (Most of it hovers around 100 BPM.) Murphy’s also got a pop-up version of Four Horsemen pouring natural and organic wine, and even a espresso stand, which comes in handy for an eight-hour set..

Tokimonsta, Leikeli47, Deem Spencer @ Brooklyn Steel
Beatmaker Tokimonsta always throws a party and tonight should be no different. Making this show even more exciting is the masked, genre-defying rapper/singer Leikeli47 who has a very fun live show as well.

Open Mike Eagle, Tierra Whack @ Rough Trade
Indie rapper Open Mike Eagle returned last year with the great Brick Body Kids Still Daydream, which is one of his best-received albums yet. Having recently opened for WHY? on tour, he now plays a headlining show in NYC.

A Tribe Called Quest Pop-Up @ House of Vans
A Tribe Called Quest have a signature line of Vans footwear and the group are celebrating with a two-day pop-up shop. Autographs will be signed, there are DJs and performances too…all TBA.

Dean Ween Group, Delicate Steve, Keith Kenny @ Brooklyn Bowl
While Ween are back together , Dean (who might be making a record with Kurt Vile) stays busy with his own group who play tonight with fellow jammers Delicate Steve and Keith Kenny.

Control Top, Empath, Privacy Issues @ Silent Barn
New-ish Philly post-punks Control Top have been making some noise lately (both literally with their loud dissonant music and also because people are talking about it), and tonight they play the soon-to-close Silent Barn. Their even noisier Philly neighbors Empath make for a good match.

Eternal Summers, Tough Age, Prism Tats @ ALPHAVILLE
Eternal Summers are unstomping the distortion pedals on their forthcoming record in favor of a jazzier indiepop direction. Tonight they’re with Canadians Tough Age, and locals Prism Tats.

Laura Stevenson, Zula, Fern Mayo @ Sunnyvale
Indie-punk staple Laura Stevenson hasn’t released an album since 2015 but she’s busy as ever in terms of playing live shows. Catch her tonight.

Monster Magnet, Painted Doll, Rahway, Sekond Skyn, Bound Alive, The Walk Arounds @ Starland Ballroom
Riff rock vets Monster Magnet are still going strong and just released their very fun new album Mindfucker, their fastest, punkiest album in a while. They’re playing a couple NY/NJ shows this week with Painted Doll, the new psych/garage rock band from death metal legend Chris Reifert (Death, Autopsy, etc) and comedian/rock musician Dave Hill.

Primitive Man, Spectral Voice, Unearthly Trance, Funeral Leech @ Saint Vitus
This show is pretty great all around, with Denver sludge greats Primitive Man who released Caustic last year, their Colorado neighbors Spectral Voice who got some buzz for last year’s atmospheric death/doom debut Eroded Corridors of Unbeing, and back-in-action NYC sludge greats Unearthly Trance.

Knocked Loose, Terror, Jesus Piece, Year of the Knife @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Brooklyn Bazaar hosts an all-around good hardcore bill tonight, headlined by the increasingly popular Knocked Loose.

Felicia Atkinson @ Issue Project Room
French experimental musician Felicia Atkinson plays her second of two NYC shows this week at Issue Project Room tonight. At this one, she’ll be “presenting a brand new performance involving an imaginary dialogue between the poems of Francis Ponge (1899-1988) and texts of her own, in French and in English, accompanied by electronics, voice and piano.”

Minibeast (members of Mission of Burma / Volcano Suns), Insect Factory, Gig Chain @ Wonders of Nature
Mission of Burma’s Peter Prescot also fronts trio Minibeast who combine “surf, psych, punk, easy listening, ’60s children’s music, and soundtrack influences to create instrumental soundscapes.”

Watain, Destroyer 666, Tomb @ Gramercy Theatre
This tour is in the midst of some controversy after Watain parted ways with their live guitarist after a picture surfaced of said guitarist giving a nazi salute, and a San Francisco venue refusing to host the tour unless the allegedly racist Destroyer 666 didn’t play. Still, the tour hits NYC tonight.
