The legendary Elton John hits NJ’s Prudential Center tonight, his first of five NYC-area shows this month, as part of his spectacular, extensive “Farewell Yellow Brick Road” tour. NYC and Brooklyn shows are next.
Ela Minus, Palmbomen II, Majetic @ Elsewhere Zone One
Musician Ela Minus (real name Gabriela Jimeno) makes dazzling, layered electronic pop, which should be perfect for an intimate setting such as Elsewhere’s Zone One.
Miya Folick, Barrie @ Elsewhere Hall
Los Angeles alt-pop artist Miya Folick is touring behind last year’s great Premonitions, and her Elsewhere Hall show tonight is also a homecoming for Brooklyn-based quintet Barrie.
Travis Scott @ Madison Square Garden
Rapper Travis Scott returns to MSG for his first of two NYC shows this week, supporting last year’s massive Astroworld.
Phony Ppl @ Blue Note Jazz Club (12:30 AM)
Genre-defying New York band Phony Ppl mix jazz, hip hop, soul, funk, rock, and more, and last year’s mozaik was really great stuff. They’re beginning a Blue Note residency tonight, which includes 12:30 AM shows every Saturday (technically Sunday) of March and April.
Innov Gnawa @ National Sawdust
This Brooklyn Gnawa collective are probably more well-known for their collaborations with producer Bonobo, but their very fun live atmosphere is good enough to catch them on their own.
Paul Oakenfold @ Schimanski
Legendary UK trance DJ Paul Oakenfold, who has done remixes for everyone from Madonna, and Massive Attack to The Cure, Britney Spears and The Rolling Stones, has also played everywhere from Wembley Stadium to The Hollywood Bowl.
Wreckless Eric @ The Safari Room at El Cortez
Best known for his punk/new wave hit “Whole Wide World,” Wreckless Eric has been cracking out ones of equal worth in the 40 years since. He’s a great storyteller too.
The Monochrome Set, The Jetbeats @ WFMU Monty Hall
The Monochrome Set were a witty, erudite breath of fresh air in the post-punk era with singles like “The Lighter Side of Dating,” “He’s Frank” and “Eine Symphonie des Grauens.” Bid and the rest of the band are still at it, having released the very good Maisieworld last year.
Jlin @ Whitney Museum
Forward-thinking electronic producer Jlin will play three consecutive shows at NYC’s Whitney Museum tonight, in collaboration with sculptor/sound artist Kevin Beasley.
Active Bird Community, Wild Pink, The Obsessives @ Bowery Ballroom
Active Bird Community and Wild Pink are two of NYC’s current most promising indie rock bands (in an early 2000s indie rock kinda way), so it’s cool that they’re teaming up for this hometown show together. Philly’s punkier Obsessives open.
