4Knots Music Fest @ South Street Seaport
Back at the Seaport where it belongs (after a weird year on the Hudson in 2015), 4Knots returns for a full day of mostly indie rock featuring headliners Guided by Voices, Protomartyr, Girlpool, Car Seat Headrest and more. Free and all-ages, 1 – 8 PM.
Maxwell, Ro James @ The Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk
Neo-soul great Maxwell recently put out his first album in seven years, and it’s the kind of thing that should please longtime fans as well as anyone who’s into Frank Ocean/Miguel/etc. Tonight he plays the newly-opened Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk.
A Place to Bury Strangers, Grooms @ Old American Can Factory
It’s the NYC premiere of documentary ‘Goodnight Brooklyn’ detailing the nine-year existence of Brooklyn DIY venue Death by Audio which was directed by one of its runners, Matt Conboy. After the screening, two of the bands who played DbA’s final night — A Place to Bury Strangers and Grooms — will play live. Sold out.
Magrudergrind, Trenchgrinder, Uniform, Pox, Filth Hound @ The Acheron
This is sadly the last night that Bushwick venue Acheron will open. Luckily they’re going out with a bang, with ripping metallic hardcore band Magrudergrind, Acheron co-owner Bill Dozer’s band Trenchgrinder, noisecore duo Uniform, and more. Doors are at 11:30 PM, but you can show up early and get your picture taken for the venue’s photo tribute.
Sick of It All, Street Dogs, Murphy’s Law, King Ly Chee, Manipulate @ Webster Hall
NYHC greats Sick Of It All turn 30 this year, and they’re celebrating at this hometown show. It’s a pretty cool lineup all around, with Boston’s Street Dogs (original Dropkick Murphys singer Mike McColgan’s band), more veteran hometown heroes Murphy’s Law, Hong Kong’s King Ly Chee and NYC’s Manipulate.
The Underachievers, Cam’ron, G Herbo, Smoke DZA, Nyck Caution @ PlayStation Theater
It’s the return of the Smokers Club Tour, and it’s a great lineup all around. The headliners are the rising New York duo The Underachievers and New York vet Cam’ron. Also on the bill is Chicago’s promising G Herbo, NYC’s perma-stoned Smoke DZA, and Pro Era’s Nyck Caution (who recently dropped his debut mixtape).
Frameworks, The Saddest Landscape, Gatherers, Capacities @ Silent Barn
Frameworks just released Smother, their first album for Deathwish, and it’s a hell of a modern screamo record with one foot in the past and one in the now. THe Saddest Landscape, who have been doing this kind of thing for a while, are also very worth seeing.
Carla Morrison, Hurray for the Riff Raff, Buscabulla @ Prospect Park Bandshell
This free show is co-presented by the BRIC! Celebrate Brooklyn Festival and the Latin Alternative Music Conference. It’s got Carla Morrison headlining, and if you’re going, we also think it’s worth catching alt-country band Hurray for the Riff Raff.
Jessy Lanza, DJ Taye, Kedr Livanskiy @ Baby’s All Right
Jessy Lanza returned this year with her sophomore album, Oh No (on Hyperdub), which like her debut, was co-produced by Junior Boys’ Jeremy Greenspan. Her tour with TEKLIFE’s DJ Taye hits NYC tonight for her second of two shows.
Nothing, Citizen, Culture Abuse, Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler @ Bowery Ballroom
This is a pretty great bill all around, with heavy shoegazers Nothing, new-school post-hardcore band Citizen, West Coast punks Culture Abuse, and experimental duo Mary Lattimore & Jeff Zeigler.
Lloyd Cole @ City Winery
It seems kind of painful to have NYC Popfest and this show happening seperately, as Lloyd Cole is one of the iconic ’80s nose-in-a-book, heart-on-his-sleeve songsmiths. He’s still very much the literate charmer.
Oneida, Chris Forsyth & the Solar Motel Band , Matteah Baim (and Faten Kanaan) @ Knitting Factory Brooklyn
A year away from their 20th anniversary, Oneida are one of Brooklyn’s longest-running, most-respected indie rock outfits, and still making killer off-kilter, intense music.
Innanet James, subdaio, Tregs, Naji, EU-IV, Abhimanyu @ Knitting Factory

Summer Scum 5 @ Trans-Pecos
It’s the return of the noise-oriented Summer Scum festival, including Alleypisser, Mercury Hall, RM, Puce Mary, Rectal Hygienics , Pharmakon, and many more. THe fest wraps up tomorrow.
Baauer, Metro Boomin, Grandtheft, Sliink, Brenmar, Ape Drums, Madeintyo, Eauxzown, Mixa @ Governors Island
This one-day fest is called The Greatest Day Ever, and it’s got a pretty cool lineup of beatmakers. We can’t promise it’ll be the greatest day ever, but it’ll be a good time.
Rakim @ House of Independents
Rap as we know it probably wouldn’t exist without Rakim’s Paid In Full, and he’ll be playing that album in full in Asbury Park tonight (one of a few shows in the area). It’s worth catching opener Donmonique too.
Jag Panzer, October 31, Power Theory, Midnite Helllon @ Saint Vitus Bar
Power metal vets Jag Panzer reunited a few years back, and if you want to see them, this is their only scheduled date at the moment, so don’t miss the chance. Tomorrow members of the band will do an Ozzy tribute at the same venue.
Sunflower Bean @ The Surf Lodge (Montauk)
If your out in Montauk this weekend, well, we hope you’re having a lovely time. Catch a pre-sundown set from these buzzy Brooklynites while you’re out there.
Phish @ XFinity Theater
Phish don’t have any NYC shows on their current tour schedule, but if you do want to see them, they’re pretty close to the city tonight.
