Coachella 2017 - Weekend 2, Friday
The Avalanches at Coachella 2017 (more by Greg Noire)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Governors Ball
It’s day two of NYC music festival Governors Ball on Randall’s Island, and today’s got indie giants Phoenix headlining, plus Childish Gambino, hitmaker Mark Ronson (“Uptown Funk”) playing a set with Tame Impala leader Kevin Parker, Wu-Tang Clan, “Fuck Donald Trump” rapper YG (who sadly plays at the same time as “Black Beatles” rappers Rae Sremmurd), A$AP Ferg, Stormzy, and more.

Bushwick Collective Block Party
The annual Bushwick Collective Block Party returns for its sixth year, happening at the corner of Troutman and St Nicholas (right near Jefferson L stop). It’s got free face painting for kids, graffiti and street art, food trucks, a Modelo beer garden, and live music with a lineup that’s heavy on veteran New York rappers. The lineup includes Dipset members Cam’ron, Juelz Santana, and Freekey Zekey, plus Foxy Brown, Statik Selektah & friends. CL Smooth, Mysonne, DJ Evil Dee (of Black Moon), and more.

Mavis Staples, Toshi Reagon @ Central Park SummerStage
Soul legend Mavis Staples is having a hell of a year, having already released high-profile collaborations with Arcade Fire and Gorillaz. Tonight she kicks off SummerStage’s 2017 season with this free show.

The Avalanches, The Range @ Brooklyn Bowl
Ahead of their Governors Ball performance on Sunday, Australian cut-and-paste artists The Avalanches place this GovBall After Dark show. Sold out, but there may be tickets at the door when the venue opens.

Warpaint, Frankie Rose @ Irving Plaza
One of the many GovBall After Dark shows tonight, California slinky groove machine Warpaint bring the vibes with Frankie Rose (who should have a new LP sometime soon) opening.

The Orwells, The Walters @ Knitting Factory Brooklyn
Yet another GovBall After Dark show, this one with Chicago rabble-rousers The Orwells.

Color Me Bushwick @ Pickthorn Studio
It’s the 2017 edition of Color Me Bushwick which mixes indie rock with hairstyling, tattoos, and fashion. Today’s music lineup starts at 1 PM and includes Debbie Downer, Heartland Nomads, Hnry Flwr, Sic Tic, A DEER A HORSE, Fiona Silver, Monograms, Wooing, Rachel Angel.

Parquet Courts, Sneaks @ Villain
Also a GovBall After Dark show, Parquet Courts play this converted warehouse events space with post-punk inlfluenced Sneaks also on the bill.

The Weeknd, Rae Sremmurd, Belly, 6LACK @ NYCB Live (Nassau Coliseum)
The Weeknd is currently on a massive world tour in support of last year’s hits-filled Starboy. He’s joined by even more hitmakers, Rae Sremmurd, plus Canadian rapper Belly (not to be confused with the rock band), and Atlanta R&B newcomer 6LACK. This is one of four NYC-area shows this week.

Rae Sremmurd @ Stage 48 (late night)
Rae Sremmurd play GovBall and open for The Weeknd at Nassau Coliseum today, but the party doesn’t stop there. They’ll be at Stage 48 for a late-night club performance.

Lupe Fiasco, Daylyt, Dayne Jordan @ Highline Ballroom
Lupe Fiasco doesn’t have the buzz that he once had, but he’s still very prolific and continues to release high-quality work. Earlier this year, he released the new album Drogas Light.

Tim Kasher, John Bradley, Campdoggz @ Knitting Factory
Cursive’s Tim Kasher returned this year with a very good solo album, No Resolution, an orchestral rock concept album about an engaged couple on the brink of a break-up. This is his second time in NYC on his tour in support of it.

Legacy of the Witch III w/ Azizaa, Marissa Nadler, Bootblacks, Anatomy @ Saint Vitus
Slutist’s third annual ‘Legacy of the Witch’ show goes down at Saint Vitus tonight, and this one’s extra exciting due to the last-minute addition of dark folk singer Marissa Nadler.

Daisy Glaze, Chocolat, Bueno @ Baby’s All Right
Montreal’s Chocolat make what you could call psych-garage, but there’s a whole lot more nuance going on in what they do, incorporating krautrock, prog and flower-power pop into the mix. They’re also really, really loud. Headliners Daisy Glaze is the new band from Alix Brown (Golden Triangle, Jay Reatard).

Zane Lowe & Friends w/ YG, Charli XCX, Anik Khan @ Schimanski
This is a particularly interesting GovBall After Dark show, with BBC Radio 1-turned-Apple Beats 1 DJ Zane Lowe bringing West Coast rapper YG, pop singer Charli XCX, and Queens-via-Bangladesh rapper Anik Khan together.

Richard Lloyd (of Television), No Ice, Castle Black, Miracle Sweepstakes @ Bowery Electric
New York rock as we know it would be much different without Richard Lloyd, whose guitar interplay with Tom Verlaine on Marquee Moon is iconic and influential, and has never quite been replicated. Lloyd recently moved out of NYC, but he’s back in town tonight.

Gatecreeper, Outer Heaven, Nerve Shatter @ Saint Vitus (matinee)
OSDM lovers Gatecreeper returned last year with the crushingly good Sonoran Deprivation, their first album for Relapse. They play a matinee in Brooklyn today.

Worshipper, Reign of Zaius @ Fat Baby
Worshipper, uh, worship, classic heavy metal, and their 2016 debut Shadow Hymns proves they do justice to that sound.

James Blake (DJ), Klaus, Dan Foat @ Output
James Blake is playing MoMA’s annual ‘Party in the Garden’ fundraiser on Monday, but he landed in NYC a little early to DJ Output tonight.

Kumail Nanjiani, Ray Romano, Aidy Bryant, Kurt Braunholer @ The Wellmont Theater
To promote his new film that he both wrote and stars in, Kumail Nanjiani is going on a comedy tour with some of the film’s other stars — Ray Romano, SNL’s Aidy Bryant, and the very funny Kurt Braunholer.

Hank Wood and the Hammerheads, Horoscope, Brandy @ Union Pool
Williamsburg has changed a lot in the last 10 years, but we can still count on Union Pool’s Summer Thunder series to bring free music and good times to their big back patio. Free, 2 PM.

Tom Zé @ Brooklyn Academy of Music
Tom Ze has always brought a touch of the avant-garde to Brazilian tropicalia, dabbling in electronics, funk and other sonic landscapes.

Kool & the Gang @ B.B. King’s
Still led by Ronald and Robert Bell, Kool & the Gang bring four decades of funk, soul and pop, not to mention classic hits like “Jungle Boogie,” “Celebration,” “Ladies Night,” “Fresh,”

Benjamin Booker @ The Surf Lodge (free)
The free concerts at Montauk’s Surf Lodge continue this evening with garage rocker Benjamin Booker.
