What's going on Saturday?

Deerhunter
Deerhunter at Coachella 2016 (more)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Deerhunter, Soldiers of Fortune @ Webster Hall
Deerhunter are still riding high off the release off last year’s excellent Fading Frontier, which was a bit of a return to the psychedelic/dream pop of 2010’s Halcyon Digest after the rougher, glammed-up Monomania. Don’t miss opener Soldiers of Fortune, who include members of Interpol, Oneida, Chavez and more. Tonight’s show is sold out.

WFMU Record Fair w/ Colleen Green, The Moles, R.L. Boyce @ Brooklyn Expo Center
The annual WFMU Record Fair continues at the huge Brooklyn Expo Center with thousands of cool, old records to pour over. There’s also the AV Lounge showing movies, and live performances today from The Moles, Colleen Green and more.

Santigold, Leikeli47, Donmonique @ Hammerstein Ballroom
Santigold’s third album 99 Cents came out earlier this year, and it’s another winner that’s not quite like either of its two predecessors. The term “alt-pop” gets thrown around a lot, but this truly feels like an alternative to the genre’s current trends.

Basement, Turnstile, Defeater, Colleen Green @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
This is a pretty cool bill all around, with UK grungy punks Basement headlining and support from late ’80s/early ’90s hardcore revivalists Turnstile, the more melodic hardcore band Defeater, and lo-fi pop punkster Colleen Green. Sold out.

Defeater, Driftoff @ Saint Vitus
After the MHOW show, Defeater play a midnight show at Vitus with local post-hardcore band Driftoff, which is a great pairing. Also…

Turnstile, Krimewatch, Countdown @ Aviv
Turnstile play a midnight show in Brooklyn too.

My Favorite, My Teenage Stride, Dennis and Donald, Pickled Onion @ Cake Shop
NYC indiepop cult heroes My Favorite, who reformed a couple years ago, make synthy indiepop with a flair for melodrama. Tonight’s the release party for their new 7″ and the lineup also includes NYC indiepop mainstays My Teenage Stride.

Louis CK, Russell Brand, Jim Gaffigan, Vanessa Bayer @ New York City Center
A killer lineup of talent is out in force tonight for ” An Amazing Night of Comedy: A David Lynch Foundation Benefit for Veterans with PTSD.”

Beatmaker Roundtable: Trapped, Metro Boomin, Sonny Digital, Zaytoven @ Red Bull Studios
Part of Red Bull Music Academy, this event features a trio of ATL hip hop producers telling the stories behind their beats, with hands-on demonstrations of the studio gear they used to make some of their most famous material. Metro’s been everywhere lately, working with frequent collaborators Future and Young Thug, but also Drake, Kanye and plenty of others. The other two also work with Future a lot, and you know Sonny Digital best from iLoveMakonnen’s biggest hits and Zaytoven from Migos’ “Versace.”

Metro Boomin, Sonny Digital, Zaytoven @ The Lively
Then later that might, the same producers will hit the decks to show off their stuff where it counts: the club.

No Joy, Creepers, Cool Angels @ Saint Vitus
Montreal’s No Joy, who are currently sporting a new black-metal-looking logo and have an EP coming out on Topshelf, hit Vitus tonight with San Francisco’s Creepers whose lineup includes Shiv Mehra and Daniel Tracy of Deafheaven.

Paul Collins Beat, Danny Laj and The Looks, Twin Guns, The Dazies @ Acheron
Former Nerves songwriter and power pop godfather Paul Collins helped pioneer a jangly sound that’s still being imitated today.

Spacin’, Thick, Bueno @ Trans Pecos
Philly band Spacin’ returned earlier this year with Total Freedom, which is another scuzzy dose of their garage/psych.

SALES, Japanese Breakfast, Leapling @ Baby’s All Right
This is the first of two headlining shows in NYC for DIY-pop band SALES, and it’s also worth catching dream pop band Japanese Breakfast, who recently released the very good Psychopomp.

Kiki & Herb @ Joe’s Pub
Legendary lounge/cabaret duo Kiki and Herb (aka Justin Vivian Bond and Kenny Mellman) went into retirement in 2007 but they’re returning to the stage for this run called “Kiki and Herb: Seeking Asylum!” Sold out but a limited number of tickets given away free each night via lottery.

Mike Birbiglia @ The Lynn Redgrave Theater
Comedian Mike Birbiglia has been doing his show “Thank God for the Jokes” for nearly two years. He’s putting it to bed, but not before this run which was recently extended through May.
