What's going on Saturday?

Afropunk 2017 - Saturday
Macy Gray @ Afropunk 2017 (more by P Squared)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Phish @ MSG
Phish are not taking it easy this year. After doing a run of 13 MSG shows over the summer, they’re now back at the venue for their time-honored tradition of ringing in the New Year there. This is night three of four.

Television, Eleanor Friedberger @ Bowery Ballroom
2017 marks the 40th anniversary of Marquee Moon and Television will close it out with two shows at Bowery Ballroom with Eleanor Friedberger.

They Might Be Giants @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
One of the OG Williamsburg bands (the ’80s!), John and John return to Music Hall of Williamsburg for two New Year’s Eve shows.

Diarrhea Planet, Stuyedeyed, Body Spray @ Rough Trade
Nashville’s raucous riff-rockers Diarrhea Planet will bring their beer-fueled power chords to Rough Trade for two New Years Weekend shows.

Jeffrey Lewis & Los Bolts, Cat Tatt, Candy Boys, Awkward Energy (Jack Lewis) @ Mercury Lounge
One of NYC’s unsung heroes, Jeffrey Lewis brings empathy, humor, brains and a sense of history to his brand of folk and is always worth seeing. If you’re wondering if talent runs in the Lewis Family, his brother Jack opens the night. The other bands on the bill all feature members of Los Bolts.

Macy Gray @ Iridium
After nine albums of pop, soul and R&B, Macy Gray reworked her hits as jazz songs for her 10th album, Stripped. She returns to the Iridium for her annual New Year’s shows.

Thursday, Frank Iero and The Patience, PUP @ Starland Ballroom
NJ post-hardcore heroes Thursday reunited in late 2016, and their recent shows have been at least as good as the ones back in Thursday’s initial run. They’re keeping the touring going in 2018, but after that, they plan to either make a new album or end the reunion. First, they’re doing a few Northeast holiday shows with Frank Iero and PUP, this being the second of two NYC-area dates (and their home state show).

Glassjaw, Cro-Mags @ The Paramount
Thursday in NJ vs Glassjaw on Long Island? Decisions, decisions. This beloved post-hardcore crew returned with their first album in 15 years this month, and it rips just as hard as their classics. Making the show even better is crossover legends Cro-Mags.

Gov’t Mule w/ special guests Jackie Greene, Shawn Pelton, The Chronic Horns and The Better Half Singers @ Beacon Theatre
In addition to Phish, another jammy New Year’s tradition in NYC is Gov’t Mule at the Beacon. This is night one of two.

Springsteen on Broadway @ Walter Kerr Theatre
The Boss is currently in the midst of his completely sold-out “Springsteen on Broadway” run at the Walter Kerr Theatre, which has now been extended through June! At these shows, Bruce plans to give fans shows “that are as personal and as intimate as possible.” This is a pretty standard show but maybe he’ll throw in a holiday song?

Handsome Dick Manitoba and The Soul Punk Kings (playing Dictators songs), Soraia, Sick Walt, The Sacred @ Bowery Electric
Another New Year’s tradition in NYC: Handsome Dick Manitoba revisiting his classic punk band The Dictators. It might not be the classic lineup but Dick still puts on a hell of a show.

The Budos Band, Electric Citizen, The Nude Party @ Knitting Factory
Daptone-signed instrumental band Budos Band will celebrate New Year’s Eve in their hometown of NYC with shows at Knitting Factory on 12/30 and NYE. Both are with heavy retro rockers Electric Citizen opening.
