Murphy’s Law, special surprise guests @ Coney Island Baby
Coney Island Baby is the new venue in the old Brownies/HiFi space that Jesse Malin is involved with, and it opens tonight. The first show at the venue will be NYHC vets Murphy’s Law, and they’re promising a set from “special surprise guests.” Going by the venue’s already-strong booking, you might not wanna miss these guests.
Minus the Bear, The Coathangers @ Warsaw
Math-pop vets Minus the Bear are celebrating the 10th anniversary of their proggiest album, Planet of Ice, by performing the album on tour. Tonight’s their second of three NYC-area shows with their Suicide Squeeze labelmates The Coathangers.
Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Makeness @ Brooklyn Steel
Unknown Mortal Orchestra’s new album Sex & Food came out earlier this month which is a further exploration of dreamy, groovy psychedelia. Tonight’s UMO’s first of two Brooklyn Steel shows.
Scottapalooza w/ The Pains of Being Pure at Heart, Titus Andronicus (acoustic), Slonk Donkerson, more @ Baby’s All Right
This is a celebration of someone named Scott who clearly has some pull as he got TPOBPAH, Titus Andronicus, Slonk Donkerson, and two unannounced acts
Built To Spill, Ritual Of Mine, Overlake @ House of Independents
Having already played a few NYC-area shows, indie rock greats headline this show that’s part of the Asbury Park Music & Film Festival.
TR/ST @ Elsewhere Zone One (8 PM live set, midnight DJ set)
Montreal musician Robert Alfons brings his dark synthpop project, TR/ST, to Zone One tonight and then DJs late night afterwards.
Ryuichi Sakamoto, Theo Bleckman, Taylor Deupree, Joseph Branciforte @ National Sawdust
“Pioneering electronic musician, composer, and pianist Ryuichi Sakamoto is joined by fellow sonic adventurers Taylor Deupree, Joseph Branciforte, and Theo Bleckmann for an expansive 90-minute set exploring the outer reaches of sound, emotion, and ambience.” Sold out.
Sunflower Bean, Rahill Jamalifard of Habibi (DJ) @ Bowery Ballroom
NYC psych-pop band Sunflower Bean release their new album, Twentytwo In Blue, back in March and are in the midst of their North American tour.
The Sweet, DJ Alex Kayne, Tragedy @ Gramercy Theatre
Original Sweet bassist Steve Priest leads this version of glam/glitter greats The Sweet whose hits include “Ballroom Blitz,” “Fox on the Run,” “Love Like Oxygen” and more. Also on the bill are Tragedy, the all-metal tribute to The Beegees.
Ilana Glazer, Phoebe Robinson @ Union Hall
Ilana Glazer (Broad City) and Phoebe Robinson (2 Dope Queens) are re-teaming for more YQY shows (that’s Yaaas Queen Yaaas). This is one of many happening in Brooklyn this month.
Comedy Co-op @ Littlefield
Michelle Collins hosts this monthly showcase featuring a rotating cast of seasoned comedians. This week’s lineup includes Janeane Garofalo, Gina Yashere (Crashing), Harris Stanton(opening act for Tracy Morgan), Liza Treyger, Noah Gardenswartz (CC Half Hour), and Seaton Smith (Mulaney).
Hatebreed, Candiria @ Starland Ballroom
Killswitch Engage had to drop off this show due to vocalist Jesse Leach’s surgery, but it’s still going on with metalcore vets Hatebreed and the genre-defying Candiria (still a great double bill).
Chrome Sparks, Machinedrum, Ela Minus @ Elsewhere Hall
Brooklyn electronic musician Chrome Sparks recently released his debut full-length album, and he was remixed by fellow Ninja Tune affiliate Machinedrum, who he’s now on tour with. Ela Minus makes this an appealing triple bill.
Cut Chemist, Shortkut, El Dusty, Edan @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Veteran hip hop DJ, former Jurassic 5 and Ozomatli member, and frequent DJ Shadow collaborator, Cut Chemist is touring this spring in support of his recently-released solo album Die Cut. Good openers tonight too.
Lindi Ortega, Hugh Masterson @ Mercury Lounge
Canadian alt-country singer Lindi Ortega is supporting her recently-released concept album Liberty, which sees her taking on the themes and sounds of Western cinema.
Mr. Jukes, DJ Monk-One @ Rough Trade (two shows)
Bombay Bicycle Club are on hiatus but frontman Jack Steadman is staying busy with his solo project Mr. Jukes, who plays two NYC shows tonight.
Joe Russo Trio (Featuring Erik Deutsch and Jonathan Goldberger) and Dave Harrington Group (featuring Andrew Fox, Samer Ghadry and Will Shore) @ Murmrr Ballroom
Joe Russo and Dave Harrington both have one foot in indie and one foot in jam, so seeing them together should make for one cool, well-matched double bill.
Bowl Train w/ Trackstar the DJ @ Brooklyn Bowl
Run The Jewels recently wrapped up a tour opening for Lorde, and tonight, their DJ comes to Brooklyn Bowl for a special edition of Bowl Train.
Reductress Live @ Carolines On Broadway
Moving from its usual stage at UCB, Reductress brings a live stand up and variety show to Carolines for a three-day engagement. Thursday’s show features headliner Janelle James (Night Train with Wyatt Cenac), Catherine Cohen (Difficult People), Friends Who Folk (The New Yorker), and Pat Regan (The Eric Andre Show). The same lineup repeats on Friday and Saturday, with the exception that Daily Show correspondent Dulcé Sloan headlines the Saturday shows.
