What's going on Thursday?

Yo La Tengo at Brooklyn Steel

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Yo La Tengo @ Rocks Off Concert Cruises
One of the NYC area’s greatest still-active bands, Yo La Tengo embody the independent spirit of rock ‘n roll and are still making great music. Who wouldn’t want to see them on a boat?

Iceage, Mary Lattimore, Norman Westberg @ Market Hotel
Danish band Iceage released the fiery Beyondless this year, and it’s sure to be a hot one at Market Hotel tonight. While you may be sweating, the DIY venue does now have a full bar.

Duck Down BBQ ft. Black Moon and Smif-n-Wessun with live band and special guests @ Betsy Head Park
As always, the free SummerStage shows include the annual Duck Down BBQ, which always puts together a lineup of some of the finest NYC hip hop. This year they’ve got Black Moon and Smif-n-Wessun “with live band and special guests,” and it seems likely that the guests will be worth it.

Kadhja Bonet, Who is Honeylou?, Yatta @ Elsewhere
Singer, songwriter, and multi-instrumentalist Kadhja Bonet mixes psychedelic soul, vocal jazz, Bond themes and more on her two studio albums, including the just-released Childqueen. Tonight’s the NYC release show for the new LP.

YOB, Bell Witch, Heavy Temple @ Le Poisson Rouge
YOB and Bell Witch are two bands who do an excellent job at combining post-rock and sludge metal. YOB are supporting the just-released Our Raw Heart, while Bell Witch are still touring behind last year’s Mirror Reaper.

Vivian Green @ MetroTech Commons
The annual BAM R&B Festival brings lunchtime concerts to Brooklyn’s MetroTech Commons every Thursday afternoon from June 7 – August 9, and today it’s long-running R&B singer Vivian Green.

My Brightest Diamond, Mic Write @ Public Arts
Art pop staple My Brightest Diamond (aka Shara Nova) has been working on a new album, and while most details are TBA, maybe we’ll luck out and hear some new songs tonight.

TEEN, Miles Francis, Hnry Flwr @ Elsewhere
Brooklyn alt-pop group TEEN, which features sisters Teeny, Lizzie and Katherine Lieberson, haven’t released an album since 2016 Love Yes, but maybe they’ll fill us in on what’s going on in their world at this rooftop show tonight. Regardless, they remain an impressively tight, captivating live band.

KRS-One @ SOB’s
Thanks to his time as a member of Boogie Down Productions and a long-running solo artist, KRS-One helped define New York rap as we know it, and he’s still in fine form today. Last year’s The World Is Mind was very solid.

UPDATE: KRS-One show moved to July 5.

Mozzy, Bri Steves, Tap 10 @ C’mon Everybody
Sacramento rapper Mozzy continues to deservedly rise, and his career got an even bigger boost when he appeared on Kendrick Lamar’s Black Panther album earlier this year. Tonight he’s in NYC for a free Heineken Green Room show. RSVP required.

A conversation with HR of Bad Brains and author/filmmaker Steven Blush @ Coney Island Baby
As the listing points out, punk legend HR of Bad Brains will be giving a live Q&A at Coney Island Baby tonight with Steven Blush, who, among other things, is responsible for the American Hardcore book and film. Free.

Jill Scott @ NJPAC
Jill Scott is one of the true greats of neo-soul and any chance to see her is worth taking. She’s still touring in support of 2015’s Woman.

Poptone (members of Bauhaus / Tones on Tail / Love & Rockets), Automatic @ Warsaw
Daniel Ash and Kevin Haskins, who were both in Bauhaus, Tones on Tail, and Love & Rockets, pull from their ’80s catalog as Poptone (with Haskins’ daughter, Diva Dompe on bass). With no David J (guys, make up already!) that leaves some Love & Rockets classics off the table, but Poptone is a surprisingly satisfying and modern experience.

Springsteen on Broadway
The Boss continues his sold-out “Springsteen on Broadway” run at the Walter Kerr Theatre, which has now been extended through December. At these shows, Bruce is giving fans shows “that are as personal and as intimate as possible.”

Tuck & Patti @ Iridium
Veteran vocal jazz duo Tuck & Patti, who are also St. Vincent’s uncle and aunt, wrap up a two-night stand at Iridium tonight.

A Midsummer Night’s Swing w/ The Loser’s Lounge @ Lincoln Center
Joe McGinty & Loser’s Lounge pay tribute to the Philadelphia Sound and disco tonight as part of Lincoln Center’s popular outdoor dancing series.
