Exploded View, FORMA @ Rough Trade
This dark-n-dubby group featuring Anika and Mexico City-based musicians Hugo Quezada (Robota) and Martin Thulin (Crocodiles), released their second album, Obey, earlier this year on Sacred Bones. If you liked Anika's solo records or Beak>, you'll dig Exploded View.
Steve Gunn, Little Black Egg, Nathan Bowles @ Union Pool
With a new album on the way in early 2019, you can expect at least a few new songs at this, the last of Steve Gunn's full-band residency shows at Union Pool. Get there early for Little Black Egg which is Georgia Hubley of Yo La Tengo.
NY Comedy Festival
The 2018 New York Comedy Festival is underway at venues all over the city and Thursday options include "Conan O'Brien & Friends," Alex Edelman, a live taping of the "No Need for Apologies" podcast and more.
The Blow, Val Jeanty, Karima Walker @ (le) poisson rouge
The Blow, aka Melissa Dyne and Khaela Maricich, are on their “ENERGETIC STRATEGIES (For Right Now)" tour where they're “continuing and expanding on their long-running practice of weaving together popular music, performance art, sound and light installation and experimental composition.”
Connan Mockasin @ Rough Trade
Connan celebrate the release of his new album Jassbusters with this sold-out in-store.
Connan Mockasin, Alex Edelman @ Baby's All Right
After Rough Trade, Connan heads over to Baby's for this show which is part of the venue's fifth anniversary celebration.
Kelly Moran @ Future Space
NYC experimental composer Kelly Moran just released her first album for Warp, Ultraviolet, and she celebrates at this sold-out release show, which will feature immersive visual design by Dave & Gabe. She also does it again at the same venue tomorrow.
Elton John @ Madison Square Garden
Elton John is saying a very long goodbye with a farewell tour that will have included 12 NYC-area shows by fall of 2019. As you'd probably expect, he's loading his setlists with hits and bringing a spectacular stage show.
Fucked Up, Bad Waitress, Candy @ Market Hotel
Fucked Up recently released their first album in four years, Dose Your Dreams, which sees them defying the hardcore genre more than ever before and introducing tons of different sounds from other corners of the music world. This is their second of two Market Hotel shows, and there's solid support from melodic grunge-punks Bad Waitress and metallic hardcore crushers Candy.
Good Riddance, War On Women (acoustic), Counterpunch, All Torn Up @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Punk vets Good Riddance made a comeback with 2015's Peace In Our Time, and they're still going strong. They're now on the road with the killer, newer punk band War On Women, who have a new acoustic 7" out this week and who are playing acoustic tonight.
Yelle, Barrie @ Elsewhere Zone One
French dancepop artist Yelle plays her first of three Zone One shows tonight.
Pond, Juan Wauters @ Elsewhere Hall
Australian psych-pop band Pond (who have shared members with Tame Impala) are wrapping up their fall tour.
Caveman, LIILY @ Mercury Lounge
Long-running Brooklyn guitar pop band Caveman have been quiet for much of 2018 -- find out what they've been up to tonight.
Springsteen on Broadway
The Boss continues his sold-out “Springsteen on Broadway” run at the Walter Kerr Theatre, which runs through December. At these shows, Bruce is giving fans shows “that are as personal and as intimate as possible.”
