What's going on Thursday?

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

The Chemical Brothers, Charlotte de Witte @ Forest Hills Stadium
The Chemical Brothers  came up in the Big Beat scene of the ’90s but their sound feels pretty fresh on their recently released ninth album, No Geography. This is Tom & Ed’s first NYC headlining show in 12 years.

The Rolling Stones, The Wombats @ MetLife Stadium
After The Rolling Stones postponed their tour due to Mick Jagger’s health issues, Mick recovered and they’re finally on the road and playing their first of two NYC-area shows tonight. The Stones need no introduction, and it goes without saying that the chance to hear their 50+ years of classic songs in person is always worth taking.

Kamasi Washington, Taylor McFerrin @ White Eagle Hall
Jazz legend Herbie Hancock and modern-day jazz leader Kamasi Washington are on a tour together, but they’re playing separate NYC-area shows. Kamasi plays this BrooklynVegan-presented Jersey City show tonight, and opening is the genre-defying Taylor McFerrin (who’s in R+R=NOW and releasing a new solo album this year). Meanwhile…

Herbie Hancock, Thundercat @ Beacon Theatre
…Herbie Hancock plays this NYC show at the iconic Beacon Theatre. Herbie is working on a new album with frequent Kendrick Lamar producer Terrace Martin (who’s also in R+R=NOW), and Terrace is in his band for this tour. Thundercat is also expected to appear on the new album, and he opens tonight. Will him and Herbie collab on stage?

Eric B. & Rakim, Doug E. Fresh, Slick Rick, Lil’ Cease of Junior Mafia, Marley Marl (DJ) @ Ford Amphitheater at Coney Island Boardwalk
Legendary rap duo Eric B. & Rakim reunited in 2017 for the first time in two decades, and they’ve kept the reunion going. Tonight, they return to the stage to headline “The Heart of Hip Hop” that has them with a whole bunch of other classic rap artists, including Doug E. Fresh, Slick Rick, and more.

Blood Orange, Kelsey Lu @ Lincoln Center Out of Doors
Blood Orange recently released his very good new mixtape Angel’s Pulse, and this is his first NYC show since its release. It’s a free Lincoln Center Out of Doors show with Kelsey Lu, who appears on Angel’s Pulse and released her own very good album this year, Blood.

Snail Mail, Duster, Sasami @ Webster Hall
Snail Mail continues to be one of the biggest indie rock breakouts since releasing her much-loved 2018 debut album Lush, and tonight is her second of two big NYC shows on this tour. Both are with likeminded contemporary SASAMI, and a reunited indie band who helped pave the way for bands like Snail Mail, Duster.

Ben Folds, Violent Femmes @ Pier 17
While Violent Femmes are more associated with the ’80s and Ben Folds with the ’90s, together they’ve got enough classics to keep the crowd singing along all night.

Charles Hayward, Tim Dahl, Alex Ward, Charles Bullen (DJ) Public Records
Last night, This is Not This Heat played what they said was their final show. Tonight, the band’s Charles Hayward performs in two incarnations, first as a duo with with bassist and Tim Dhal, and then they’ll be joined for a second set by This Is Not This Heat’s live member Alex Ward on amplified clarinet and electric guitar. After that, Charles Bullen of TINTH will DJ.

Kyle Craft & Showboat Honey, The Silver Triplets, Sam Himself @ Baby’s All Right
Showboat Honey is both the name of Kyle Craft’s new album on Sub Pop and his band. Expect a night of glammy power-pop.

Deadbeat Beat, Patio, Hypoluxo @ ALPHAVILLE
Chicago’s Deadbeat Beat includes drummer/vocalist Maria Nuccilli (Outrageous Cherry) and guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Alex Glendening (Tyvek, Stef Chura, The Moles) and make jangly indie rock that’s recommended to fans of The Clean. The group’s new album, How Far, is out this week and tonight’s show is with Patio who are also worth catching.

Lankum, Morgan O’Kane @ Rough Trade
Dublin folk band Lankum released Between The Earth And Sky back in 2017 via Rough Trade and are currently on their second North American tour of 2019.

Ruthie Foster @ MetroTech Commons
Ruthie Foster incorporates blues, soul, gospel and more into her sound which has been compared to Bonnie Raitt and Aretha Franklin. She plays this free lunchtime show as part of the 2019 BAM R&B Festival.

Laraaji @ Wave Hill
Ambient music icon Laraaji plays this free show at Wave Hill in the Bronx as part of their Twilight in the Garden Sonic Experience series which sounds like a nice way to soundtrack the sunset. Free, 7 PM.

3TEETH, Author & Punisher, GosT @ Bowery Ballroom
Industrial newcomers 3TEETH’s new album METAWAR was produced by Sean Heavan, who mixed the first two Nine Inch Nails albums and co-produced the first three Marilyn Manson albums, and if you like the era of popular industrial rock that those artists were associated with, you might dig 3TEETH too. They’re on tour now with the great one-man industrial metal band Author & Punisher and synthwaver GosT.

Stick To Your Guns, Counterparts, Terror, Sanction, Year of the Knife @ Brooklyn Bazaar
If you’re into modern metalcore and/or melodic haredcore, this year’s Pure Noise Records Tour has got you covered from start to finish.

Khalid, Clairo @ Madison Square Garden
Huge R&B/pop star Khalid and rising alt-pop artist Clairo are on tour together, hitting NYC’s massive Madison Square Garden for the second of two consecutive shows tonight.
