What's going on Thursday?

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Taking Back Sunday, You Blew It! @ Irving Plaza
Taking Back Sunday’s classic lineup — the one that recorded their first and best album Tell All Your Friends — have been back at it since 2010 and have since become their longest-last lineup. Their fourth record together — TBS’ seventh overall — came out this year. If you’re going to this show, it’s definitely worth catching openers You Blew It!. After a few albums and EPs that helped revive Kinsella-style emo, YBI! are going into more inventive realms with their upcoming Triple Crown debut, Autotheology.

Bear vs Shark, LVL UP, Pinkwash @ Bowery Ballroom
Bear vs Shark were around for two albums in the early 2000s of arty post-hardcore that have lived up really well. They’re currently on their BrooklynVegan-presented reunion tour, which lands in NYC tonight for its second of two sold-out shows here. Recent Sub Pop signees LVL UP and Don Giovanni band Pinkwash open this one.

The Growlers, Cut Worms @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Julian Casablancas liked the Growlers so much, he signed them to his label and thier first record for it is out Friday. Come celebrate its release with them tonight.

Kula Shaker, SeepeopleS @ Rough Trade
UK band Kula Shaker’s new album K2.0 finds their mix of classic riffs and Eastern music flourishes (tabla, sitar) pretty much unchanged since the days of “Hush” and “Tattva.” This is their first of two Rough Trade shows this week.

Poster Children, Stuyvesant, Risk/Reward @ Saint Vitus Bar
Late 80s/early 90s alt-rock vets Poster Children are celebrating the 25th anniversary of their 1991 LP, Daisychain Reaction (which spawned the memorable single “If You See Kay”), on this tour.

Death Valley Girls, Honduras, Veiny Hands @ Shea Stadium
Death Valley Girls‘ Glow in the Dark came out back the spring, a very appealing witches brew of garage, psych and glam.

The Scenics, Coy Kids, Dentist @ WFMU Monty Hall
Toronto’s The Scenics were an art-punk/new wave band who formed in 1976, drawing a lot of influence from what was going on in New York at the time (Talking Heads, Ramones, Lou Reed, Television), and released one single and an album before calling it quits in 1981. They reformed in the late ’00s and this is their first U.S. tour in eons.

Blitzen Trapper, Kacy & Clayton @ City Winery
Portland, OR’s Blitzen Trapper are presenting an evening of “Stories & Song” tonight at both early and late shows.

Jerry Seinfeld @ Beacon Theatre
So what’s the deal with these shows? Seinfeld’s playing once a month at Beacon Theatrre, that’s what.

Lady Wray, The Shacks, 79.5 @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Nicole Wray was one half of neo-classic duo Lady who released a terrific debut album in 2013, and before that she was an in-demand vocalist, having sung on records by Missy Elliott, Aaliyah, Ginuwine, Playa, Timbaland and more. Lady didn’t make it much past that debut LP, but Nicole kept the name, and is now doing it solo as Lady Wray.

The Luyas, Gemma, KATIEE, The Forms @ Cake Shop
After a few years away, Montreal’s Luyas are back, having just released a new EP that finds their askew, dreamy sound fully functional.

Diet Cig, Acid Dad, Free Cake For Every Creature, Fits @ Knitting Factory
Even if you’re not sold on Diet Cig’s music, their bubbly live show can bring a smile to your face. Tonight they team with fellow buzzy bands Acid Dad and Free Cake For Every Creature, making this show a good way to knock out some recently-hyped stuff.

HEALTH, Yvette, Dreamcrusher @ Market Hotel
HEALTH returned last year with Death Magic, the noise band’s most accessible album by far, but one that’s still very heavy in a live environment. Their show is highly recommended, especially at a cool small venue (Market Hotel) with two good noisy openers (Yvette and Dreamcrusher). Sold out.

All Dogs, Mannequin Pussy, Outer Spaces, Katie Ellen @ Silent Barn
This is a good bill all around of catchy, DIY-spirited indie punk.

Janelle Monae, Nate Ruess @ Central Park Summerstage
Janelle Monae’s highly ambitious sound pulls from art rock, psychedelia, soul, R&B, pop, funk, rap and more, and there’s a huge visual element too that comes across at the live shows. (It’s no surprise people compare her to Prince and Bowie.) Tonight she plays a free show, that you have to be a Capitol One member to get into, with fun./The Format singer Nate Ruess.
