ash-1997

What's going on Thursday?

Spirit of ’77: Ash back in the day.

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Ash, Jeremy and the Harlequins @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Ash‘s breakthrough album 1977 (named after the year 2/3 of the members were born, but also for Star Wars and punk rock), featuring mid-’90s alt-rock classics “Girl from Mars,” “Oh Yeah,” “Goldfinger” and “Kung Fu,” turns 20 this year and the band are celebrating by playing it back-to-front.

Sigur Ros @ Kings Theatre
Sigur Ros are currently on their first-ever tour without an opening act. Instead, the band will be doing two sets at each show, starting at 8:30 PM sharp each night. The shows will also be just the band without the string and brass sections they’ve had on recent tours, and they’re planning to debut new music on the tour. They’re also promising “new interpretations of old songs that haven’t been played in a very long time.” This is their second of three nights in NYC.

The Faint, Gang of Four, Pictureplane @ Webster Hall
It seems a little wrong for Gang of Four to be opening for a band they clearly inspired, but it also seems a little wrong to call it Gang of Four when (admittedly amazing) guitarist Andy Gill is the only original member.

Diarrhea Planet, Western Medication, White Rope @ Bowery Ballroom
Nashville triple-guitar shredders Diarrhea Planet are as unpretentious as a sixer of cheap beer and probably just as much fun (though those things probably go hand in hand).

Japanese Breakfast, Emily Reo, Sharpless @ Baby’s All Right
Japanese Breakfast hail from the Northeast DIY scene but bring a big new wave/’80s Fleetwood Mac influence, and the band’s very solid songs recently earned them a spot on the Dead Oceans roster. Tonight they play NYC with two pretty good local openers. There a free midnight show with a secret hedliner following Japanese Breakfast’set.

Crystal Castles, Guidance, Alex Zelenka @ Warsaw
It’s weird to imagine caring about Crystal Castles without Alice Glass in the band, but if you do, you can see them tonight.

Laurel Halo, Volvox, Elon Katz, Bookworms @ Good Room
Sometimes Laurel Halo is making eccentric art pop, and other times she’s making heady dancefloor-moving beats. No matter what mode she’s in, it’s good.

Puff Pieces, The Effects, Pinkwash @ Shea Stadium
If you’re a fan of Dischord-style post-hardcore/indie rock, you may wanna see this show that has Puff Pieces (ex-Antelope) and The Effects (ex-Faraquet).

Titus Andronicus, Happiness @ Cannon’s Blackthorn
The Tommy Brull Foundation’s annual ‘Shine A Light’ benefit show is tonight in Rockville Centre, NY, headlined by anthemic punks Titus Andronicus. Happiness (who have members of Deer Tick who have played this benefit more than once) open the show.

Mouth of the Architect, The Netherlands, So Hideous, Zvi @ Saint Vitus
Fans of experimental metal may wanna catch this show, which is loaded with true talent from start to finish.

Superhuman Happiness, Arc Iris, Elvis Perkins @ Rough Trade
This bill is pretty good all around, with saxy pop collective Superhuman Happiness, chamber pop band Arc Iris, and folk rocker Elvis Perkins.

Band Of Skulls, Mothers, Drowners @ Terminal 5
We’re not crazy about the headliner, but rising Athens, GA indie-folk band Mothers are worth catching.

Bebel Gilberto @ National Sawdust
Daughter of João Gilberto, Bebel has forged her own path in bossa nova. This is her second of three National Sawdust shows.

Jerry Seinfeld @ Beacon Theater
What’s the deal with these shows? Jerry’s playing once a month at Beacon Theater for the whole of 2016, that’s what. And that’s not nothing.

Bill Frisell @ Blue Note
An insanely talented guitarist who can play just about any style, Bill Frisell is a wonder to see perform. Tonight he plays with Greg Leisz (guitar and steel guitars), Tony Scherr (bass) and Kenny Wollesen (drums).

Rick Astley @ Town Hall
We wonder how many audience members are being told they’re going to see something else?
