What’s going on Tuesday?
You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...
George Clinton & Parliament-Funkadelic, DJ Prince Hakim @ BB King's
Funk and soul legend George Clinton remains as relevant and awesome as ever. Just last month, his band Parliament released their first song in 38 years, "I'm Gon Make U Sick O'Me" (ft. Scarface), and it fits right in with their classics but also sounds totally fresh. They're currently on their annual Mardi Gras tour, hitting NYC for Fat Tuesday tonight.
First Aid Kit, Van William @ Beacon Theatre
Folk-pop duo First Aid Kit recently returned with their new album Ruins, which has their haunting harmonies in very fine form. Opening tonight is Van William (aka Port O’Brien and WATERS frontman Van Pierszalowski), who has a collaborative song with First Aid Kit and has been joining them on stage during this tour to play it.
milo, Euclid, jpegmafia @ Drom
Rory Ferreira is a very prolific rapper/producer, consistently releasing music under his scallops hotel and milo monikers. Last year he put out the great milo album Who Told You to Think??!!?!?!?! and that's the moniker he plays under in NYC tonight.
Beautiful/Anonymous Podcast with Chris Gethard @ The Bell House
‘Beautiful/Anonymous’ is Chris Gethard’s podcast where he takes calls from anonymous strangers and lets the conversation play out however it may. He’s taping new episodes at a residency at The Bell House this month. This is night two of three.
Glasser, Sola, Alena Spanger (of Tiny Hazard) @ Union Pool
It’s been a while since Glasser released a new album but things appear to be stirring in her world. Every Tuesday in February, she’ll be performing new music with hand-selected guests.
Sleigh Bells, Sunflower Bean @ Brooklyn Steel
Having recently played a tiny show at Rough Trade, distorto-pop duo Sleigh Bells are back at a much bigger venue. Sunflower Bean, who will have a second album out this spring, open.
Homeshake, Greatest Champion Alive @ Market Hotel
Homeshake frontman Peter Sagar used to be Mac DeMarco's lead guitarist and the apple doesn't fall too far from the tree, with last year's Fresh Air full of dreamy melodies and that distinctive waterlogged guitar sound. Clearly there's room for both he and Mac -- this is Homeshake's first of four sold-out Market Hotel shows.
Purr, Field Trip @ Baby's All Right
Jack and Eliza, formerly known as Jack & Eliza, now make music as Purr. The winsome, acoustic indie pop sound hasn't changed much. This is their second week of their three-week residency. It's a free show.
Courtship Ritual, Veda Rays, Winkie, Toyzanne, Heavy Birds (spoken word), Noise Love DJ Set @ Sunnyvale
Miss the early '00s days of Interpol and The Stills? Veda Rays are still flying the dark pop flag and continue their Sunnyvale residency tonight with a pretty good undercard including the slinky, gothy sounds of Courtship Ritual and minimal wavers Winkie.
Michelle Shocked @ City Vineyard
Looking like a '60s beat, Michelle Shocked transcended folk roots to become a hit on college radio in the late '80s -- 1988's Short Sharp Shocked still sounds great -- and incorporated jazz, bluegrass, and the blues inter her sound. Tonight's show is part of City Vineyard's intimate "Voices on the Hudson" series where only 100 seats are sold.
