You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight's shows, but here are some highlights...
Television, Alan Licht @ Elsewhere
Punk and indie rock as we know it wouldn't exist without NYC legends Television, who helped pioneer the idea of applying a punk attitude to more complex music, and made one of the best rock albums of all time with 1977's Marquee Moon. They play their hometown tonight.
Phoebe Bridgers, Angelica Garcia @ Asbury Lanes
Phoebe Bridgers has been in the (indie music) news constantly lately, thanks to recent collaborations with Julien Baker, Justin Vernon, The National, Lord Huron, Manchester Orchestra, Mumford & Sons, and more, and all this is only happening because she was able to win over all of these artists with her music, which really is that good. (Her 2017 debut album, Stranger in the Alps, is one of the most gripping singer/songwriter albums in recent memory.) Tonight she headlines a show at the newly-reopened Asbury Lanes.
Worriers, Tancred, Oceanator @ Baby's All Right
Tonight, Baby's hosts a very solid triple-bill of indie/punk acts, headlined by local staples Worriers.
Heavy Blanket (J Mascis, Kevin Sweeney, Herb Graham Jr.) w/ Ron & Scott (Stooges Tribute) @ Coney Island Baby
J Mascis is doing a double header at new NYC venue Coney Island Baby (formerly home to Brownies and Hi-Fi) tonight, with his Stooges cover band Ron & Scott and his psychedelic blues jam group Heavy Blanket.
Rico Nasty, Maliibu Miitch @ SOB's
This is a killer double bill of rising rappers. Earlier this year, Rico Nasty released her Atlantic debut Nasty, and it's both one of the hardest and catchiest rap projects of 2018. Bronx rapper (and Rico's Atlantic labelmate) Maliibu Miitch has been working on a full-length of her own, and though most details on that are TBA, her recent singles have all been furious.
Spirit Adrift, Wrong, Unearthly Trance @ Union Pool
Three great metal bands team up for this Union Pool show, including doom revivalists Spirit Adrift, Miami's Helmet-inspired Wrong (ex-Capsule, Torche, Kylesa), and back-in-action NYC sludgefeasters Unearthly Trance.
Birds In Row, Portrayal of Guilt, Nine Of Swords, Superblonde @ The Kingsland
French hardcore band Birds In Row recently released an awesome new album, We Already Lost the World, which is just as abrasive as this band ever was, but it also has some of their catchiest, most melodic material yet.
Amanda Shires, Sean Rowe @ Bowery Ballroom
Talented alt-country singer/songwriter Amanda Shires releases her new album To The Sunset this week, but first she plays this show, her second of two NYC shows this month.
Olivia Chaney @ National Sawdust
Even if you aren't familiar with British folk singer Olivia Chaney, you probably know her recent collaborators The Decemberists, which whom she released an album last year under the name Offa Rex. Her own material is great too, as you can experience in person tonight.
The Generator Series hosted by Ilana Glazer w/ guests Cynthia Nixon & Laura Moser @ BRIC House
Broad City co-star Ilana Glazer wraps up the "Generator Series," for which she "[interviews] an activist and a politician to see how they each serve us – the people," tonight. Tonight's guests are Sex and the City star turned politician Cynthia Nixon, who is running for Governor of New York, and Daily Action founder Laura Moser, who recently ran for congress in Texas.
Ben Sisto - "Who Let the Dogs Out?" @ The Bell House
The Baha Men's 2000 novelty hit "Who Let The Dogs Out?" maybe be a punchline these days, but there's actually a fascinating, complicated story behind it, full of backstabbing, greed, and deceit. Ben Sisto tells the whole sordid story complete with powerpoint slides at this event which is technically free but is also a fundraiser for BARC shelters.
