Florence and the Machine, Grimes @ Barclays Center
Florence + the Machine and Grimes put out two of 2015’s best, most forward-thinking pop albums, so it’s a real treat to see them back to back. They’ll do it at Brooklyn’s massive Barclays Center tonight and tomorrow.
Tame Impala, Dungen @ Prospect Park Bandshell (Celebrate Brooklyn)
While we’d argue that music is always better in a small club, some bands excel at the Big Outdoor Show and Tame Impala are one of them, with trippy visuals/lightshow added to their spacey, summery vibe. If you’re going to this sold-out show don’t miss Swedish psych-rock greats Dungen.
Cymande, Sinkane @ Brooklyn Bowl
British psychedelic soul/funk vets Cymande put out some classic material in the early ’70s that continued to gain recognition over time, especially as the group became heavily sampled in hip hop, and eventually Cherry Red reissued their first three albums in 2014. Last year, the band — still with original members Steve Scipio (Bass, vocals) Patrick Patterson (Guitar, vocals) Sam Kelly (Drums) Mike Rose (Sax, flute, percussion) Pablo Gonsales (Percussion, vocals) and Derek Gibbs (Sax) (but without original vocalists Ray King & Joey Dee and saxist Peter Serreo) — put out their first album since 1981. Tonight’s their second of two NYC shows this month, and it’s with DFA artist Sinkane.
Beth Orton, Emmy the Great @ (le) poisson rouge
Beth Orton got Andy from Fuck Buttons to produce the just-released Kidsticks, which is her most electronic-leaning album to date. Her airy vocals are still instantly recognizable. It will be interesting to see how these songs are performed live.
Shannon and the Clams, Bleached, Brainfreeze, Hinds (DJ Set) @ House of Vans
Tonight’s free House of Vans show is headlined by soulful, twangy and raucous Shannon and the Clams, with Bleached’s fuzzy pop, and NYC/Madrid duo Brainfreeze. Hinds, who just opened for Brian Wilson in McCarren Park, will DJ. RSVP is now closed.
Chairlift, Miles Benjamin Anthony Robinson @ Coffey Park (Red Hook)
Part of SummerStage, this free show features two regular faces of Williamsburg’s late-’00s scene: Chairlift and MBAR (who has been quiet lately). Free.
The Blow, Starlee Kine @ Union Pool
Electro pop duo The Blow are currently recording a new album following up 2013’s self-titled LP. While they finish that up, they’ll premiere new material (and play old favorites too) over the course of three Union Pool residency shows this month.
Minsk, Bloodiest @ Saint Vitus
It’s a double header of Illinois-based metal boundary pushers, with post-metal band Minsk, and art-metal experimenters Bloodiest.
The Jayhawks, Folk Uke @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Midwest Americana greats The Jayhawks, who released Paging Mr. Proust earlier this year, are skilled musicians and songwriters, they’ve got a wealth of great songs to pull from tonight.
Mikey Erg, Nuclear Santa Claust, Hiccup, Katie Ellen @ Knitting Factory Brooklyn
If you’re into pop punk (like, you know, the good kind), one of the most exciting things happening this year is the return of The Ergs. Before that though, Mikey Erg is putting out his debut solo album and celebrating with this release show. This album isn’t a million miles away from The Ergs, and if you like that band, you’ll probably dig this too. Also, very cool openers tonight.
Mudcrutch (w/ Tom Petty), The Shelters @ The Capitol Theatre
Mudcrutch, Tom Petty‘s pre-Heartbreakers band that were initially around in the early ’70s but didn’t record an album until 2008, are reunited this year for live shows and a second album. They just played two nights at Webster Hall, and tonight they’re just outside of NYC for another show.
Big Freedia @ The Bell House (Ask Me Another)
The Ophira Eisengberg-hosted ‘Ask Me Another,’ “a rambunctious hour that blends brainteasers and local pub trivia night with comedy and music,” tapes live at The Bell House. This week’s guest is the Queen of Bounce, reality TV star, and Beyonce collaborator Big Freedia. Things should get interesting.
DJ Need a Stack (Bob from Pavement), Annalibera, Willy Muse @ Baby’s All Right
Bob Nastanovich, who you may know from Pavement and Silver Jews, is will be pulling double duty at Baby’s tonight, first playing in Annalibera (Midwestern indie rock with an ethereal side thanks to Anna’s classically trained voice), and then he’ll be spinning tunes as “DJ Need a Stack.” From the press release bio: “In addition to trying to entertain with a vast blend of music from 1950-2015 (he has been on a bit of a Hawaiian kick and you’re as likely to hear Walter Wanderley as Wire), Nastanovich gladly takes suggestions on strategies to reignite Pavement and Silver Jews action.”
SWEET @ The Slipper Room
Seth Herzog hosts this long-running comedy night that always features great guests.
Cake Shop Comedy @ Cake Shop
If you miss Big Terrific and Hannibal Buress’ Sunday night show at Knit, and are looking for a new free, weekly comedy show that happens in a rock club and sometimes has big name talent stop by unexpectedly, “Cake Shop Comedy” might do the trick.
