Joanna Newsom @ El Museo del Barrio
It’s been four years since Joanna Newsom put out her last LP, Divers, and no concrete sign of new music at the moment, but she’s in the midst of a seven-night NYC run playing plenty of old favorites. Joanna Newsom shows are truly entrancing, and these should be no different.
Deerhunter, Dirty Projectors @ Webster Hall
Long-running indie bands Deerhunter and Dirty Projectors have led pretty parallel careers, both forming in the early 2000s, having major breakthroughs in the late 2000s, and more recently settling into a comfortable, slightly more accessible version of their most classic albums. So it’s pretty cool that they’ll be sharing a bill at Webster Hall tonight and tomorrow.
Boris, Uniform @ Elsewhere Hall
Japanese heavy music icons Boris are over 25 years and 23 albums (and even more collaborations and other projects) into their career, and they refuse to slow down. They’re gearing up to release a new double album called LφVE & EVφL in October on Jack White’s Third Man Records (their first for the label), and the psychedelic new single “LOVE” is genuinely great stuff. Opening tonight is noisecore band Uniform, who make for a very good double bill.
Fontaines D.C., Pottery @ Bowery Ballroom
Ireland’s fiery Fontaines D.C. spent the first half of the year on tour with IDLES, now they’re back, Mercury Prize nomination in hand, on their own headlining tour, with Montreal’s Pottery opening (and who you should try to catch if you’re going tonight).
Raphael Saadiq, DJ DUGGZ @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
After staying busy working with Solange, Insecure, and more, R&B/soul vet Raphael Saddiq returned with his first new album in eight years, Jimmy Lee, last month, and now the Jimmy Lee tour hits NYC tonight.
Subhumans, Fea, Soul Glo, Material Support @ The Kingsland
UK anarcho-punk legends Subhumans are releasing their first album in 12 years this week, and recent single “99%” sounds pretty great, but even better is their live show which is still as powerful as you’d hope for. Good openers tonight too.
Black Milk @ Baby’s All Right
Detroit underground rap staple Black Milk recently released his DiVE EP on Mass Appeal/Computer Ugly, and now he’s playing some shows in support of it with his live backing band Nat Turner.
Sugar Candy Mountain, Dustrider @ Baby’s All Right
Joshua Tree, California’s Sugar Candy Mountain make sunshine psych that seems to pull equally from ’60s acts like The Free Design and modern purveyors like Tame Impala and The Flaming Lips.
Lightning Bug, Blush, Dark Tea @ Elsewhere Zone One
NYC psych/dreampop band Lightning Bug celebrate the release of their new album, October Song, tonight with a very solid undercard.
Joe Mande @ The Bell House
Joe Mande is mostly known as a writer for The Good Place and Parks and Recreation, but he’s also a great standup. Tonight he presents his new show, “King of Content,” where he offers “an heroic attempt to heal a broken nation with his patented mix of humor and content.”
The Men, Tierra Del Fuego, Kyle Avallone @ Union Pool
Brooklyn punks have been somewhat quiet since releasing Drift last year — catch up with them tonight.
Bridget Everett & The Tender Moments @ Joe’s Pub
Backed by her band The Tender Moments, Bridget Everett provides an extremely unexpurgated night of comedy and music that may not be for the easily embarrassed.
Telepathic Band @ Pioneer Works
Telepathic Band (Daniel Carter, Federico Ughi, Hilliard Greene, Patrick Holmes, and Matthew Putnam) are celebrating their new album Electric Telepathy Vol 1 (which you can read more about here) with a release show at Pioneer Works tonight.
