Cloud Nothings, Shellshag @ Villain
Cloud Nothings have been quiet for too long, but they finally return to NYC tonight for this show (that was moved from Market Hotel). They’ve got plenty of great stuff to play tonight, but they’ve also been hinting at a new album, so maybe we’ll get treated to some new songs.
Drake, Future, dvsn, Roy Woods @ Barclays Center UPDATE: Show postponed.
Drake and Future both had unstoppable 2015s, and they remain prolific this year too. Opening the show are two Drake proteges, including dvsn, whose excellent debut album came out earlier this year.
Blonde Redhead with American Contemporary Music Ensemble, Luke Temple @ Co-Cathedral of Saint Joseph
A couple years ago, NYC indie vets Blonde Redhead released the new album Barragan, and earlier this year, they reissued their out-of-print early material on Numero Group. Tonight they play a special show, joined by the American Contemporary Music Ensemble.
Nots, The World, The Meltaways @ Baby’s All Right
Memphis band Nots have not tamed their snarling, dystopian garage punk in the least on new album Cosmetic, which is a real ripper.
Whitney, Hoops, Sam Evian @ Bowery Ballroom
Whitney (featuring Max Kakacek and Julien Ehrlich of Smith Westerns) released their debut album earlier this year, a breezy, summer record indebted to the ’70s Laurel Canyon sound with a nice dose of horns. This is one of three NYC shows this week.
Merchandise, Public Memory, Flasher @ WFMU Monty Hall
With their new album A Corpse Wired For Sound, Merchandise move still further from their punk roots and into late-’80s Brit alt-rock, still with lots of style.
Luke Roberts, The Loom @ Mercury Lounge
Last in NYC to play the big Webster Hall opening for Kurt Vile (who sings on his new record), Luke Roberts returns to headline a smaller show tonight. If you like KV, or ’60s/70’s folk, this is worth checking out.
Eric Burdon and The Animals @ City Winery
The Animals were one of the grittier British Invasion bands, and frontman Eric Burdon has gone on to have an eternally-cool career. They play two NYC shows this week, this being the second.
Arto Lindsay @ National Sawdust
No wave legend Arto Lindsay plays a unique show at National Sawdust tonight. Here are the details: “The show is an augmented solo. The artist asks the audience to reconcile untuned guitar noise and ballad singing. Placing speakers in and around the audience makes further demands on their intimacy.”
Vermin Womb, Gadget, Pyrrhon, Organ Dealer @ Saint Vitus
Denver grinders Vermin Womb (ex-Primtive Man) and Sweden’s Gadget hit Vitus tonight with cool local support from tech-death freaks Pyrrhon.
The Whigs, Caverns @ Brooklyn Bowl
Georgia trio The Whigs have been making no-nonsense, underrated pop-rock for 15 years now and remain an entertaining live band.
Ilana Glazer @ Littlefield
The Broad City co-creator presents this night of comedy with some of her friends. Sold out, natch.
Bill Frisell @ Blue Note
An insanely talented guitarist who can play just about any style, Bill Frisell is a wonder to see perform. This week at Blue Note his show is called “When You Wish Upon a Star,” a tribute to the music of Walt Disney films, with help from That Dog’s Petra Haden, plus Eyvind Kang (viola), Thomas Morgan (bass) and Rudy Royston (drums).
Cake Shop Comedy @ Cake Shop
If you miss Big Terrific and Hannibal Buress’ Sunday night show at Knit, and are looking for a new free, weekly comedy show that happens in a rock club and sometimes has big name talent stop by unexpectedly, “Cake Shop Comedy” might do the trick.
SWEET w/ Seth Herzog @ The Slipper Room
Seth Herzog hosts this long-running comedy night that always features great guests.
