What's going on Wednesday?

Meat Puppets
Meat Puppets

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Meat Puppets, Sumo Princess, Stephen Maglio @ Mercury Lounge
Meat Puppets are back with their original lineup of Curt & Cris Kirkwood and Derrick Bostrom (plus Curt’s son Elmo and new keyboardist Ron Stabinsky), and they’ve got a very good, folky new album called Dusty Notes out now. Their Northeast tour begins tonight, and includes two NYC shows and two NJ shows.

JPEGMAFIA, Abdu Ali @ Elsewhere (Red Bull Music Festival)
Red Bull Music Festival continues tonight with avant-rapper JPEGMAFIA and his show “A Tribute To Buttermilk Jesus.” As good as JPEGMAFIA’s recordings are, his energetic live show might even be better.

Imogen Heap @ Town Hall
Imogen Heap is on her first North American tour in nine years, and making the tour even more exciting is that she is reuniting with her Frou Frou partner Guy Sigsworth for it. The tour is happening in conjunction with the launch of Mycelia, Imogen’s new “research and development hub for music makers,” but she isn’t letting the unique concept deter her from playing lots of solo and Frou Frou classics. This is her second of two NYC shows.

Listener, Birds In Row, Quentin Suave @ The Kingsland
French screamo band Birds In Row are back in North America supporting last year’s great We Already Lost the World, which we named one of the best punk albums of 2018. This tour is with Listener and Quentin Sauvé (the singer/songwriter solo project of Birds In Row’s bassist).

Sacred Reich, High Spirits, Savage Master @ Saint Vitus
Phoenix thrash vets Sacred Reich have been on the road with Iron Reagan and Leeway, both of whom play Brooklyn’s Black N Blue Bowl. Sacred Reich aren’t playing that festival, but they have their own Brooklyn show tonight.

Turnover, Turnstile, Reptaliens, Illusion @ Starland Ballroom
Turnover and Turnstile have similar names and come from the same scene but sound nothing alike: Turnover are a breezy dream pop band and Turnstile make psychedelic, alt-metal-leaning hardcore. Both are great in their own way and this should be an awesome show.

The Dandy Warhols, Cosmonauts, The Vacant Lots @ Brooklyn Steel
Long-running Portland psych-rock vets The Dandy Warhols released their 10th album, Why You So Crazy, earlier this year.

Nickel Creek, Punch Brothers @ Carnegie Hall
Chris Thile is usually busy hosting his Minnesota Public Radio show Live From Here these days, but he’s set time aside to tour with his trio Nickel Creek, and tonight’s show also features Thile’s other band, Punch Brothers.

Morrissey @ Lunt Fontanne Theatre
After a couple nights off, Moz continues his Broadway residency tonight. He’s been dusting off some oldies for these shows, what might he play tonight?

The Drums, Tanukichan @ Asbury Lanes
Having just released their very good fifth album, Brutalism, indie pop band The Drums play this intimate show tonight ahead of tomorrow’s bigger show at Warsaw.

Delicate Steve, The Muckers @ Baby’s All Right
Indie rock guitar slinger released Till I Burn Up earlier this year, another prime example of his six string virtuosity.

SAICOBAB (w/ YoshimiO, I.U.D. (ft. Lizzi Bougatsos & Sadie Laksa) @ Issue Project Room
This is the NYC debut of SAICOBAB, a four-piece that includes firebrand Boredoms singer YoshiimiO, and the bill also includes I.U.D., the duo of Lizzi Bougatsos (Gang Gang Dance) and Sadie Laska (Growing, Extreme Violence).

Grist Comedy Extravaganza w/ Eugene Mirman, Negin Farsad, Ophira Eisenberg, Aparna Nancherla @ The Bell House
A killer lineup of comedy talent is performing tonight at this benefit for Grist, an nonprofit that works towards climate, justice, and sustainability issues.

The Talent Show: Double or Nothing ft. Mike Birbiglia and Jennifer Stein w/ Jon Benjamin, The Lucas Bros, John Hodgman, Lucy Wainwright Roche @ Littlefield
Elna Baker and Kevin Townley host this monthly variety series which each month has a theme — tonight’s is “Double or Nothing.” It’s a great lineup too.

Justin Vivian Bond @ Joe’s Pub
Cabaret star, Downtown maven and one half of Kiki & Herb, Justin Vivian Bond “explores dreams of stardom, otherness, and strategies of escaping tweenage small-town boredom in a new show called A Star Is Borned, The New Adventures of Chipra.”
