What's going on Wednesday?

Elvis Costello
Elvis Costello

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Elvis Costello & the Imposters, Blondie @ Forest Hills Stadium
Two classic artists come armed with their hits for this sure-to-be fun outdoor show at the lovely Forest Hills Stadium. If you don’t know The Imposters feature Attractions members Steve Nieve and Pet Thomas.

Remembering Lou Reed w/ Patti Smith, Suzanne Vega, Tony Shanahan, Lenny Kaye, and “very special guests” @ City Winery
As part of City Winery’s 10th anniversary, they’re throwing some tribute shows including this one to NYC legend Lou Reed. It features another NYC legend who was inspired by and friends with Lou, Patti Smith, as well as her bandmates Tony Shanahan and Lenny Kaye. It also features Suzanne Vega and “very special guests” who aren’t announced.

Wavves, Surfbort, Sharkmuffin @ Industry City
Wavves have come a long way from their lo-fi beach-punk days, and their shows are always a high-energy, killer time. Surfbort, who are also very energetic, provide direct support.

Caleb Giles @ Last Light
Experimental New York rapper Caleb Giles (who also plays sax in Standing on the Corner) releases his new album Under The Shade today, and if you dig other avant-rap stuff like MIKE and recent Earl Sweatshirt, you’ll probably dig this too.

Un, Wormwitch, Undeath @ Brooklyn Bazaar
Canadian blackened thrashers Wormwitch recently released their great new album Heaven That Dwells Within, and now they’re supporting it on tour with Seattle doomers Un, who released Sentiment last year and a split with Coltsblood this year.

Iggy Azalea, Silky Ganache Bowery Ballroom
Australian rapper Iggy Azalea released her new album In My Defense last week, and she’s celebrating with release shows in LA and NYC.

Hannah Gadsby @ Daryl Roth Theatre
Hannah Gadsby‘s acclaimed 2018 show and Netflix special, Nanette, centered about the idea that she was quitting comedy. Which happily, is something she actually has not done. “I don’t have any other skill sets,” she joked in an announcement video on Facebook for her new stand-up show, “Douglas,” which continues its month-long NYC run tonight.

Mike Birbiglia @ Cherry Lane Theatre
Mike Birbiglia regularly tests out new material with “Working it Out” shows that are often last-minute gigs at tiny clubs like Brooklyn’s Union Hall. This summer, Mike will be “Working it Out” at a residency at Manhattan’s Cherry Lane Theatre that continues tonight and runs through August 15.

Steve Miller Band, Marty Stuart and his band, Matt Anderson @ Pier 17
Appealing to space cowboys, gangsters of love, jokers, smokers, midnight tokers, and most of the rest of us, Steve Miller will break out the hits — but probably not play our favorite “Macho City” — tonight.

Supersuckers, The Sweet Things, Ten Ton Mojo, The Threads @ The Bowery Electric
Supersuckers have been putting out quality cowpunk, garage rock and more since the early ’90s, mostly recently on last year’s succinctly titled Suck It.

Kid Millions/Jim Sauter Duo, Hamish Kilgour, Sloppy Heads, Adam Ostrar @ The Footlight
It’s a night of experimental, improvisational music with Oneida drummer Kid Millions and Saxophonist Jim Sauter, The Clean drummer Hamish Kilgour and more.

The Mentally Ill, Unknown Sender, Substitute @ Union Pool
Chicago’s The Mentally Ill earned their place in punk history with their Gacy’s Place 7″ (about serial killer John Wayne Gacy). Despite never really playing live, The Mentally Ill gained a cult following, counting Thurston Moore, Steve Albini and Jello Biafra as fans. In 2007 the band played their first official gig and have been going since.
