Coachella 2017 - Weekend 2, Friday
Father John Misty at Coachella 2017 (by Erik Voake)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Father John Misty, Dams of the West @ Kings Theatre
Opinions are split on FJM’s sprawling new album Pure Comedy, but its hard to deny his charms as a live performer. This is his first of three sold-out NYC shows this week, and he’ll be back in the area again later this year. Dams of the West is Vampire Weekend drummer Chris Tomson’s side project.

Meat Puppets, Mike Watt and The Jom & Terry Show, Grant Hart @ Brooklyn Bowl
Back in 1985, Meat Puppets, Mike Watt’s band Minutemen and Grant Hurt’s band Husker Du went on their label SST’s ‘SST – The Tour’ Tour (with Saccharine Trust and SWA), and this year they’re celebrating that tour by having the Meat Puppets hit the road with Watt and Hart. Should be a pretty awesome night.

Savoy Motel, Lionlimb @ Baby’s All Right
Nashville’s Savoy Motel, which features Cheap Time’s Jeffrey Novak and members of Heavy Cream, inhabit a weird sonic world that has one foot in glittery glam, and the other in minimal, twitchy post-punk, with everything southern-fried.

Pond, Kirin J Callinan @ Bowery Ballroom
Once best known as a Tame Impala offshoot, Pond have become draw of their own, having just released the very good new album The Weather. This is their first of two NYC shows this week, and both are with wild man and fellow Aussie Kirin J. Callinan who is not to be missed.

The Cult, Vowws @ Brooklyn Steel
Going from goth rockers, to AC/DC style hard rock, into mystic territory, frontman Ian Astbury and guitarist Billy Duffy remain The Cult’s through line.

Forest Swords, Actress, Umfang @ Mercury Lounge
This is a cool bill all around, with all Ninja Tune artists. Forest Swords and Actress both recently released new albums, Compassion and AZD, respectively, and Umfang is releasing Symbolic Use of Light in June.

Empire of the Sun, Grandmaster Flash @ Terminal 5
It’s weird to this Empire of the Sun frontman Luke Steele used to lead jangly indie rock band The Sleepy Jackson. These days he looks ready to invade Earth, Flash Gordon be damned. He does still write a catchy hook. Opening is NYC hip hop icon Grandmaster Flash. Sure, why not?

Chris Forsyth & the Solar Motel Band, Richard Papiercuts, Mountain Movers @ Union Pool
Fans of pysch will want to head to this show featuring Chris Forsyth, oddball Richard Papiercuts, and New Haven’s blistering Mountain Movers.

Caged Animals, Wooing, King Missile, Jeffrey Lewis, Pinc Louds @ Pianos
Caged Animials celebrate the release of their new EP at this show which features two NYC vets: the great Jeffrey Lewis and long-running eccentrics King Missile.

Adrian Belew Power Trio @ Iridium
Adrian Belew has played with everyone from Bowie and King Crimson to Talking Heads and Nine Inch Nails. Here’s a chance to see his fretwork up close and personal as part of this “Power Trio” featuring drummer Eric Slick and his sister, bassist Julie.
