What's going on Wednesday 7/20

Royal Headache @ Saint Vitus, 2015 (more by Amanda Hatfield)

You can browse our full NYC show calendar for all of tonight’s shows, but here are some highlights…

Royal Headache, Warthog, Career Suicide @ Music Hall of Williamsburg
Watching Australian band Royal Headache is kinda like being courtside at a tennis match, with frontman Shogun being the ball. The band’s soulful brand of punk is terrific, and they really don’t tour much, so don’t miss this chance to see them. Making this even more of a can’t-miss show: Career Suicide, the pre-Fucked Up band of Jonah Falco who are now back in action.

Las Robertas, Palmas, Scully @ Alphaville
Costa Rican garage rock band Las Robertas headline this show, but we also recommend you get there in time for Brooklyn’s terrific Scully as well.

Secret Guest, Bambara, Those Creatures @ Berlin
The “secret guest” headlining this show is “in town for Panorama Festival.” The other bands on this bill lean towards noise/garage. Any guesses?

Holy Fuck, Doomsquad @ Bowery Ballroom
The mid-’00s dance-punk scene is alive and well and living in Canada — Holy Fuck’s new platter ‘Congrats’ sounds like prime George W. Bush era jams. They play tonight with a younger band who are also keep that torch alive, Doomsquad.

Ryan Adams, Amanda Shires @ Central Park SummerStage
The wildly prolific, wildly talented Ryan Adams (here backed by The Shining) plays this SummerStage benefit tonight. It’s worth showing up early for alt-country violinist/guitarist/singer Amanda Shires too.

Flight of the Conchords, Eugene Mirman, John Hodgman, Michael Che @ Forest Hills Stadium
New Zealand’s “fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo acapella-rap-funk-comedy folk duo” are back in action, and Jemaine and Brett play Forest Hills tonight with some really funny support from John Hodgman and Eugene Mirman (both of whom were on the HBO FotC series) and brainy wit Demetri Martin.

BJ The Chicago Kid, Elhae, Tish Hyman @ Highline Ballroom
R&B/soul singer BJ the Chicago Kid is everywhere lately. He’s on Dr. Dre’s latest album, Dre protoge Anderson Paak’s album, the hugely-loved Chance the Rapper album, and his own Motown debut In My Mind came out earlier this year.

DZ Deathrays, Unstoppable Death Machines @ Knitting Factory Brooklyn
Brisbane, Australia’s DZ Deathrays bring their nitro-blues sonic assault to Brooklyn tonight. You may wonder how two people make so much noise.

Gary Higgins, Ed Askew, Alice Cohen, LeCompte @ Shea Stadium
This bill has three under-the-radar legends, with folk singers Gary Higgins and Ed Askew, who put out classic albums in the ’70s and ’60s (respectively) and continue to make music, and post-punk vet Alice Cohen, who was in The Vels in the ’80s, Die Monster Die in the ’90s, and now is a very active solo artist.

Jack & Amanda Palmer, Thor & Friends @ (le) poisson rouge
Amanda Palmer has a new covers album with her dad Jack that takes on songs by Richard Thompson, Sinead O’Connor, Kimya Dawson, and more. Tonight’s the second of two NYC release shows in support of it.

Patti Smith, Lenny Kaye, Tony Shanahan @ Lincoln Center/Damrosch Park Bandshell
Punk legend Patti Smith is delivering “a night of words and music” with her bandmates Lenny Kaye and Tony Shanahan as part of the free Lincoln Center Out of Doors festival.

Okkervil River & yMusic @ National Sawdust
Okkervil River will release their anticipated new album Away this September. The album is something different for them, with frontman Will Sheff enlisting the help of members of the yMusic ensemble to help flesh it out. That ensemble will be performing with him tonight at this special, intimate show.

The Seth Bogart Show, Contessa CUNTMAFIA, Macy Rodman @ Rough Trade
You may remember him from Gravy Train or Hunx and His Punx but here Seth Bogart is under his own name and presenting this prop-filled, multimedia show that is sure to be very entertaining.

Bichkraft, Deli Girls, Special Guest TBA @ Trans-Pecos
Ukrainian postpunk band Bichkraft had visa problems that kept them from being here for Northside Fest, but they’ve made it here now.

Murs, Propaganda, Jabee @ The Studio at Webster Hall
Veteran underground rapper Murs is active as ever, most recently putting out the solid Have a Nice Life last year on Tech N9ne’s Strange Music label.

Jeff Beck with Buddy Guy 2016 @ The Theater at Madison Square Garden
Get the blues tonight with these two guitar legends.

Summerscreen w/ Taylor Bennett @ McCarren Park
Even if you’re not familiar with Taylor Bennett, you’re probably familiar with his older brother Chancelor Bennett, aka Chance the Rapper. Taylor has a similar melodic-rapping style to his brother, and collaborates with him (and his friends) too. Tonight he performs before a screening of The Fast & Furious.
