Whitney announce debut LP, share "Golden Days" video, playing Brooklyn release show at end of tour

Whitney have announced details of their debut album, which is titled Light Upon The Lake and will be out June 3 via Secretly Canadian. Core duo Max Kakacek and Julien Ehrlich, both of whom were in Smith Westerns, made the record with former Foxygen guitarist Jonathan Rado producing. Check out the video for wistful, slightly twangy new single “Golden Days,” along with album art and tracklist, below.

If you’re wondering about the band name, Kakacek sheds some light:

We were both writing as this one character, and whenever we were stuck, we’d ask, ‘What would Whitney do in this situation?’ We personified the band name into this person, and that helped a lot. We wrote the record as though one person were playing everything. We purposefully didn’t add a lot of parts and didn’t bother making everything perfect, because the character we had in mind wouldn’t do that.

The band hit SXSW by storm last week, including a packed-house set during our Friday day party, and their tour includes stints opening for Wild Nothing and Unknown Mortal Orchestra (with whom Ehrlich also used to play). They’ll finish their tour in NYC with an album release party at Baby’s All Right on June 3. Tickets for that show go on sale Friday, March 25 at noon.
