Murals

Whitney, the new band from former Smith Westerns members Max Kakacek and Julien Ehrlich, recorded a cover of "Southern Nights" by Allen Toussaint who we very sadly lost a few weeks back. With little more than electric piano backing, it's a lovely version of the song, and a nice little tribute, and you can stream it below.

The band will be in NYC next month for a one-off show at Baby's All Right on December 12. It's a pretty appealing lineup, with Louisville, KY's Murals and Long Island's talented Lemon Twigs. Flyer for the show is below and tickets are on sale now. Whitney say they're announcing more tour dates soon. Stay tuned.

Both Murals and Lemon Twigs have played on the same bill at Baby's before -- both were at BrooklynVegan's Saturday CMJ party. Murals have a new single out and, we hear, an album on the way soon. Lemon Twigs have a new album, produced by Foxygen's Jonathan Rado, out next year.

In related news, the Allen Toussaint show that was to have happened at City Winery on Sunday (11/29) is now a tribute show featuring Jon Batiste and special guests TBA. The show is sold out but you can sign up for the waiting list. Proceeds go to New Orleans Artists Against Hunger and Homelessness, which was founded by Allen Toussaint and Aaron Neville in 1985.
