Whitney played Baby's All Right & Market Hotel (pics, video), playing Bowery & MHOW in October

Whitney didn’t get to play Governors Ball on Sunday because of the rainout (they tried to hop on the Courtney Barnett show at Rough Trade but it wasn’t to be) but they did play three other NYC shows before that, all in celebration of their terrific debut album Light Upon the Lake.

The band were in fine form on Friday (6/3), the actual release day for the LP, at Baby’s All Right. Singer Julien Ehrlich also plays drums, and they put him and the kit right up front which is an interesting dynamic. I also dug that trumpeter Will Miller uses a harmonizer pedal to make it sound like a horn section, a crucial element to Whitney’s sound. The seven piece band ran though (I think) the entirety of their debut album, plus doing covers of Bob Dylan’s “Tonight I’ll Be Staying Here With You” (which they did at Other Music the night before) and The Everly Brothers’ “So Sad.”

The band came out for the encore (“No Woman”) with a bottle of champagne which they proceeded to spray the crowd with. Julien Ehrlich also had a bottle of Smirnoff Ice with him. “I got iced backstage, I have to do this. I swear we’re not a ‘bro’ band,” he said sheepishly before taking the knee and chugging it. So if you were wondering if “icing” was still a thing in 2016, it apparently is.

Whitney also played a sold-out show at Market Hotel on Saturday (6/4), that was even sweatier and, like Baby’s, with EZTV. The band have just announced they’ll be back in NYC this fall for NYC shows at Music Hall of Williamsburg on October 10 and Bowery Ballroom on October 11. Tickets for Bowery and MHOW go on sale Friday, June 10 at noon with AmEx presales beginning Wednesday, June 8 at noon.

Those are the only fall shows Whitney have announced so far but they’re on tour with summer with Michael Rault and all dates are listed, along with a few more pictures from Baby’s (and a few from Market Hotel), below.
