Wrestling legend The Iron Sheik dead at 81

Hossein Khosrow Ali Vaziri, aka professional wrestling/WWE legend The Iron Sheik, has died age 81. The news came via his official social media: “Today, we gather with heavy hearts to bid farewell to a true legend, a force of nature, and an iconic figure who left an incredible mark on the world of professional wrestling. It is with great sadness that we share the news of the passing of The Iron Sheik, but we also take solace in knowing that he departed this world peacefully, leaving behind a legacy that will endure for generations to come.”

Born March 15, 1942 in Damghan, Iran, Vaziri spent time as bodyguard for the last Shah of Iran, Mohammed Reza Pahlavi. He also aspirations for being a Olympic wrestler, nearly making the 1968 team. Upon immigrating to the US in the early-’70s he became the assistant coach of two US Olympic squads, and was assistant coach to the USA team in the 1972 Munich Olympics. He made his WWF debut in 1979 and became one of the most popular “villains” on the 1980s; in 1985, along with Nikolai Volkoff, he won the WWF Tag Team Championship at the very first WrestleMania at Madison Square Garden. Sheik was inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame in 2005.

In more recent years, Sheik found new popularity on Twitter and inspired the name of Long Island punks Iron Chic.
