Yo La Tengo Hanukkah Night 3: David Cross, Sun Ra Arkestra, more (setlist, pics, video)

Yo La Tengo celebrated Night 3 of Hanukkah, and a little bit of Christmas Eve, on Tuesday at Bowery Ballroom, part of their annual festive run. Sun Ra Arkestra, who’ve played YLT’s Hanukkah shows the last two years, were the surprise musical openers, and another old friend, David Cross, came out as the Rabbi Alan Sugarman to answer audience questions. The Arkestra’s horn section came out to play with Ira, Georgia and James midway through their set, and then stayed through the end. The encore  included covers of Gary Lewis & The Playboys, The Left Banke, and Velvet Underground.

Ira made the night’s mix CD, Amanda Nazario was the post-show DJ and proceeds went to National Immigration Law Center. Check out the Night 3 setlist — via Jesse Jarnow’s Frank & Earthy blog — and a few pics/video below. Check out the previous nights — which have included appearances from Janet Weiss, Lucinda Williams, Steve Gunn/William Tyler and more — here.

The remaining five Hanukkah shows at Bowery Ballroom are now all sold out, but sometimes more tickets are put back on sale, so it’s worth checking back.
